    • May 3 Misty Morn

      May 3, 2012 in Muskoka

A warm, misty morning. Small ripples crease the bay and the crows are having a huge debate. It's not quiet. I can just make out a boathouse through the mist, but can't see the shore. It appears to be floating in nothing. Eerie!
Yesterday's warm rain made the buds pop - and we know what that means.... for the next 7 - 10 days those little black flies are upon us - it started yesterday. They're not biting yet, but it won't be long! It won't last long either. Just a payback for the joys of Muskoka ... Another sign of spring was seeing a black bear cub on East Bay Road. Momentarily there was the thought of getting out of the car to take a picture - he really was cute! But where there's a cub, there's usually a mother and you just don't want her to think her frolicking baby is in any kind of danger. As I'm writing, a young raccoon has waddled down to the water's edge. The mergansers don't even notice. I often wonder what it must have been like when the first people who cottaged here arrived for the summer. It's relatively rare to see a bear today, one hears about sightings, but to see one? Maybe once a year. Was it any different 150 years ago? The fishing must have been out of this world!
The crows have left. Quiet reigns and the mist is lifting - the boathouse has landed.... I can see the shore. Back to reality ....
