MarketWATCH Muskoka: 15 November 2017

Santa came to Bala last week and he’s coming to Port Carling this weekend, heading to Bracebridge on December 3rd, with Gravenhurst and Huntsville yet to be visited. Bala’s famed Trek to Bethlehem is in another couple of weeks. If you’ve never experienced it, take your children and grandchildren…it’s a wonderful way to give an historic perspective to Christmas.

Muskoka is resonating with the sounds and sights of this magical time of year. The Christmas train is on its way…

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 20 September 2017

Summer and September this year are synonymous. Who would’ve thought? The lake is warm, as are the evenings. The days? Summer like. Many of us think September is THE BEST month in Muskoka. This year it’s even better!

The Fall Studio Tour begins this weekend. Maybe this year it will be the first Summer Studio Tour. Regardless, the tour is always interesting, whether shopping for that special piece, thinking about Muskoka decorations for a festive table or just hoping to be inspired by something that catches your eye. The Tour is all of that and then some, carvings, metalwork, sculpture, paintings, fabrics …just about everything you could imagine. If you plan to go, drop by the Bracebridge Farmers’ Market at the same time. You’ll be glad you did.

On the cottage side of things, activity has picked up – both in terms of properties coming to market and properties selling. We’re busy. Plan ahead. Some of us already have appointments for the weekend. Don’t be disappointed!

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 13 September 2017

September brings the Fall Studio Tour to Muskoka. We celebrate artists and artisans, people of creativity and talent who live and create here. Quite special to have so many gifted people so close. The Tour, which takes place in Spring and Fall is a real eye opener and definitely worth doing.

If you listen to the news, you’d think summer is over. Not so. We are embarking on what many people think is the finest part of the season in Muskoka. September. With it comes warm, sunny days, cool nights, no bugs and a peacefulness on the water that is hard to find in high season. The water’s still warm, swimming’s a pleasure and so is just sitting on the dock, enjoying nature. September enhances Muskoka as leaves turn to their golden and rusty hues. Somehow the sky seems bluer, it’s definitely clearer and the reflection of the forest in the lake is brighter. September glows!

Bridge at Bala Bay

Bridge at Bala Bay

We were invited to a Summer Soltice party on Bala Bay. The cottage was a true summer cottage built in 1912 with a magnificent covered porch. Our host had recently completed a 1000 hour restoration of a 1970 Greavette. He took us for a ride. The mahogany gleamed, the engine purred and the ride was smoother than silk. To top it off, we saw a ‘double crossing’ at the railway bridge then back to the old cottage for a mess of fresh lobster. Summer in Muskoka ….

Greater Tuna

July 10, 2013 in Arts and Crafts, Bala

New Actors’ Colony 3rd season began Sunday in Bala. Tonight Greater Tuna opened. It’s an endearing and funny play about quirky, fictional Tuna Texas. This production stars Michael Petersen and Peter Shipton and was ably directed by Annette Procunier. Both actors portray several characters and do so with great facility. The characterizations, movements and intonations from one to another truly mask the artists delivering the performances. For a night out, this is a great choice … the experience will ‘play’ with you for some time afterwards. A well earned standing O!

MuskokaFest

June 16, 2013 in Bala, Muskoka, summer

For years Bala was the home of Wakestock. Bala Bay is a great body of water for skiing, boarding and barefoot. Its configuration is such that it’s great for spectators too. All that and some spectacular sun and a warm, calm day combined to make this year’s MuskokaFest a blast. Cars were parked on both sides of 169 for quite a distance, docks, decks, boathouses and parks were filled with the sound of happy campers celebrating a great day by the water. And the boarders? Well they were just head over heals enjoying themselves!

Bala Performance

May 16, 2013 in Arts and Crafts, Bala, Muskoka, spring, summer

Dan Mackinnon came to Bala and performed at Trinity St Albans Church as part of the New Actors’ Colony Theatre spring program. Dan was engaging and those who attended came away proud to be Canadian. Here’s  a sample of Dan’s mastery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsjsckL6s9c New Act, as it’s known in these parts, is launching its 3rd season in July with 6 different production. The theatre is an exciting addition to the cultural life of Muskoka for cottagers and residents alike.
