Antique Boat Show

July 5, 2014 in Gravenhurst, Muskoka, Port Carling, Rosseau

Hold on! I'm coming ...

Hold on! I’m coming …

Today’s the day. Woody lovers from all over North America descend on Gravenhurst for the annual Antique and Classic Boat Society’s Boat Show. Traffic across Lake Rosseau has been brisk as woody owners coverge on their way to the locks in Port Carling. This gentleman’s racer roared by in a flash, spray flying. Exhilarating! One beautiful day in Muskoka and not a better way to spend it. Gravenhurst! It’s worth the ride …

Boathouse

Ferndale Boathouse

This boathouse sits on lower Lake Rosseau. It’s one of the largest on the Big 3. Currently, it’s being refurbished for an important event this summer. The building is magnificent. The barge in front has been on site now for more than a week. At $2000 a day, that’s quite a parking bill. There are about 10 painters working on it too. Their gig runs for 6 or 7 weeks. Phew!

Blue evening

Bkue evening 001

It has taken a while. Cloudy skies have prevailed for quite some time. As of last night, we had a respite in time for sunset. The blue of Muskoka is back! Right now it’s -2C. A tad chilly for shorts. By the end of the week, the longs will be gone! The blue is back!!

Double Take

May 2, 2014 in ice, Rosseau

Walking past the living room window this morning I had to do a double take. My stomach flipped. “say it ain’t so!” The light and smooth surface of Lake Rosseau conspired to create an eerie sensation. The ice was back!  Fortunately it was only momentary.

Opening in the ice

In front of our place on Lake Rosseau the ice parted. It wasn’t open long, a matter of minutes. This waterfowl came along and started fishing. It’s a beautiful bird – looks loon like. But it’s not the loon that’s common around here. Any ideas?

Sunset melt

April 24, 2014 in ice, Rosseau, spring

sunset meltLast evening’s reflection of setting sun in the pools of melt on lake ice gave us hope we’d soon be boating. This morning those pools of water are gone. Last night’s low of -9C made more ice. Rather than being darker today, the lake’s hard covering is a brighter, lighter colour. Last gasp? We certainly hope so!!

Summer destination

May 28, 2013 in Lakes, Muskoka, Rosseau, summer

All the Muskoka players have their parts and are in place. Summer can really begin. Flags flying, Wenonah II made her first foray across Lake Rosseau to the JW Marriott for a dinner cruise. Summer in Muskoka. Is there any place you’d rather be?

Good night, dock boy

May 21, 2013 in Cottage, Rosseau, summer

For the first time in almost 8 months, Edith Island on Lake Rosseau sparkled at night. The lights were on. Somebody was home. Back to the island cottage for the summer. Around 10:30, one by one the lights went out. It was like watching The Waltons in real time. Good night Jim-Bob, Sleep well, John Boy.

Ice out time

April 20, 2013 in ice, Muskoka, Rosseau

Ice out is an exciting happening. First you see it, then it’s gone. For years I have waited to watch the ice disappear. Rarely have I seen it. Yesterday the day started with or view being ice covered. By the end of the day, water prevailed. There were some ice floes as wind shifted ice from bay to lake. One floe was of particular interest – at least a mile out in the lake it sprouted a branch. A tree grow on Rosseau!

The Big Melt

April 10, 2013 in ice, Rosseau, snow

It’s happening! The Big Melt is here. Like a bathtub ring, mist is held in the bowl of the lakes shrouding islands so they appear to float. No parking on the water this week, the ice has lost its strength. Locally we say it’s rotting – and not soon enough! This time last year we had been boating for 3 weeks already. But I get ahead of myself. 15cm of snow it forecast for Friday. Melt? Schmelt!
