Muskoka

Patiently waiting

June 12, 2014 in Gravenhurst, Lakes, Muskoka

We go both ways!

We go both ways!

Arriving in Gravenhurst this morning it made sense to check on the ships. There they were. Patiently waiting. Each going its own way. I could imagine the slogan ” Coming or going we’ve got you covered. We go both ways!”

Old Muskoka

Unmistakable Old Muskoka

Unmistakable Old Muskoka

On weekends Muskoka is a busy place. Weekdays it settles back to a languid pace. Gone are the big boats with hemis. In their place the puttputt of one bangers, burbles from 4’s and sixes and the occasional roar of a lycoming are the mechanical backdrop to scenes of Old Muskoka

First sunset of June

First sunset of June

First sunset of June

Summer sunsets. It’s what people pay for. More than any other exposure, Muskoka cottage buyers ask for sunset views. Not just light at the end of the day, they’re like that perfect golf shot that keeps you coming back. Art on the canvas of the heavens. The promise of more to come ….

New boathouse

Inspired design

Inspired design

A number of years ago bylaws changed in Muskoka Lakes, 300′ became the minimum frontage allowable for 2 storey boathouses. As well, height restrictions came into play which limited ability to have attic storage. The resulting boathouses on smaller frontage became boxy and dull. Not here! The designer thought ‘outside the box’ and created  gracious space filled with light and perfect for waterside entertaining. Delightful!

Testing, testing

Opened up and no body came

Opened up and no body came

Sitting on a patio in Port Carling on a gorgeous Muskoka afternoon and the drawbridge starts to flap. One side at a time. It took a moment to realize it wan’t opened for traffic. It was open for testing. Good thing it wasn’t a busy day or Port Crawling would’ve become Port Stopped.

Seeing these creatures crossing the lake is akin to seeing a prehistoric animal. They don’t really fit the picture. But they are essential to island life. Living on the lake has challenges. It looks like the boathouse is sinking. It’s not. Water level is still high and a large number of properties still have docks under water.

Freezing fisher

The morning after

The morning after

Up to his waist in COLD water. It wouldn’t take long to develop a chill or worse. In the days of wetsuits and diving, we learned to warm ourselves by peeing in the suit at depth. Maybe that’s where all the beer went yesterday? Something has to be keeping him warm ….

May 2-4, the night before

Almost to the bare walls

Port Carling on May 2-4 Sunday afternoon. This LCBO is reported to have the highest sales per square foot of any outlet in the province. This holiday weekend people seem to making up for the lack of  Muskoka cottage time so far this year. If this is the night before … I’m wondering what the morning after will bring?
