Muskoka’s got talent

July 6, 2014 in Arts and Crafts, Muskoka, Port Carling, summer

Everyone wins!

Everyone wins!

Each Saturday through July and August the deck of Remax Hallmark’s Port Carling office is made over to exhibiting the work of Muskoka artists, artisans and crafts people. This effort is in aide of the Brock and Willa Napier Wellness Centre that will house a Nursing Station, Hospice and Senior’s Residence. The show’s exhibitors donate 10% of their sales to the Centre. Yesterday, the theme of the exhibit was oil and acrylic painting. National gold medallist, Allan Beckley, brought his super realism to the deck and Synthia just couldn’t resist. Not just one but three Beckleys will have pride of place in her home. Congratulations!

a little r&r this weekend

a little r&r this weekend

Even though it’s a shortened week with Canada Day, now’s a good time to kick back, let the gentle breezes blow and listen to gentle lapping on the shore of Townsend Bay, Lake Joseph. Summer’s here!

Bridge at Bala Bay

Bridge at Bala Bay

We were invited to a Summer Soltice party on Bala Bay. The cottage was a true summer cottage built in 1912 with a magnificent covered porch. Our host had recently completed a 1000 hour restoration of a 1970 Greavette. He took us for a ride. The mahogany gleamed, the engine purred and the ride was smoother than silk. To top it off, we saw a ‘double crossing’ at the railway bridge then back to the old cottage for a mess of fresh lobster. Summer in Muskoka ….

First sunset of June

First sunset of June

First sunset of June

Summer sunsets. It’s what people pay for. More than any other exposure, Muskoka cottage buyers ask for sunset views. Not just light at the end of the day, they’re like that perfect golf shot that keeps you coming back. Art on the canvas of the heavens. The promise of more to come ….

Through this portal

June 19, 2013 in Arts and Crafts, Bala, summer

Through this portal magic happens. New Actors’ Colony Theatre (New Act) has opened its ticket booth for the shows and extravaganzas that will occur throughout the summer months in Bala. This next week there are 2 events – one on Sunday, a strawberry social at a secret water’s edge garden known only to those who buy tickets and, the other at the Bala Bay Inn on June 25 (Sherman Downey)  … the fun begins. Find it all at the New Act Website and come to Muskoka for something special! www.newact.ca

A new destination

June 18, 2013 in Arts and Crafts, Gravenhurst, Muskoka, summer

At the corner of Gravenhurst’s version of Portage and Main (Muskoka Rd and Bay) stands a landmark. The Albion Hotel. Dating from the 1800’s it has a long and varied history. Lately not one that would add to its glory in any way. Going through a rebirth and edging back to becoming a centre of social activity, the old hotel is rising again. And like the redeveloped Wharf in town, The Albion will become an attraction and destination.

MuskokaFest

June 16, 2013 in Bala, Muskoka, summer

For years Bala was the home of Wakestock. Bala Bay is a great body of water for skiing, boarding and barefoot. Its configuration is such that it’s great for spectators too. All that and some spectacular sun and a warm, calm day combined to make this year’s MuskokaFest a blast. Cars were parked on both sides of 169 for quite a distance, docks, decks, boathouses and parks were filled with the sound of happy campers celebrating a great day by the water. And the boarders? Well they were just head over heals enjoying themselves!

Postcard perfect

June 4, 2013 in Muskoka, Port Carling, summer

One of those picture perfect postcard kind of days. Clear blue skies, no wind to speak of. Temperatures in the low 20’s. A special day – and then, through the locks passes Wenonah on a cruise to Windermere and beyond. A great day to sit on deck and watch Muskoka slip by. I was standing at the top of the hill in Port Carling looking northward over Boatworks – a marina located in the Johnston buildings which were erected in the early 20’s – and there she was. Scenes like this really happen!

Summer destination

May 28, 2013 in Lakes, Muskoka, Rosseau, summer

All the Muskoka players have their parts and are in place. Summer can really begin. Flags flying, Wenonah II made her first foray across Lake Rosseau to the JW Marriott for a dinner cruise. Summer in Muskoka. Is there any place you’d rather be?

No roll today

May 22, 2013 in golf, Muskoka, summer

It could be August. The Big Lakes are wrapped in a shroud of thick mist. Air is heavy with humidity. It’s men’s day at South Muskoka. No roll today.

Misty morn
