cute but don’t cuddle

At the end of our laneway we have a shy neighbour. Kinda cute. Occasionally we see him waddling down the road. Yesterday while out for his waddle, he stopped to say hello – but kept his distance, thankfully. I have enough bristles!

Opening in the ice

In front of our place on Lake Rosseau the ice parted. It wasn’t open long, a matter of minutes. This waterfowl came along and started fishing. It’s a beautiful bird – looks loon like. But it’s not the loon that’s common around here. Any ideas?

Turkey tracks

March 5, 2013 in Muskoka, snow, turkeys, Wildlife

Wild turkeys. They’re everywhere in Muskoka. They range from Manitoba to the Maritimes – millions of them.  They’re big birds. Only one native bird is heavier. Male wild turkeys frequently top 30 lbs. Although ungainly, they can fly up to 100 kph for more than 500 metres. They stand more than 4′ in height. Seeing their tracks in the snow can make you think one of the raptors from Jurassic Park is on the loose. These prints are next to a size 8 adult boot.
